Outside of Cricklade we met this nice man having his dog fetch a plastic water bottle from the river. (Bobbie: I told him this is my dog's favorite toy, and he said, "Yes. because it's LOUD!") So we talked a bit and he asked us if we were interested in fossils. We thought, "Now we are". And he pulled fossils out of his pocket that he'd found in the field that were millions of years old. He explained the names which we've forgotten. They were shells and a fossilized squid, evidence that this area was once part of a vast sea.
River getting bigger. This is one of many pretty wooden footbridges we sometimes pass, and sometimes cross.
This little pub dog is a "Dorgi". (Liz: It seems that one of Princess Margaret's Dachsunds had its way with one of the queen's Corgis, hence a Dorgi craze. We understand it is a recognized breed in England and according to our source, "a nasty tempered creature". This little fellow was mellow, however, maybe because he lived in a pub and drank lots of cider.)
Here is a Viszla puppy we saw by Godstow Abbey. So nice-faced!
These are the ruins of Godstow Abbey. Fair Rosamund, Henry II's girlfriend, lived here, and there is some story of her being poisoned by Henry's wife- look it up...
Here's a Westie in a pub at the Swan Inn near Newbridge, we think. He had his own little blanket under his owners' regular table. (Bobbie: does it seem like we are spending a lot of time in pubs?)
We must be off to Abingdon next. Hope there's an internet cafe there so we can post more pictures.
CHEERIO!
The Rosamund story should be in the book I gave you. It covers Plantagenets at least to Richard and John, Henry II's sons.
